Many of us are great at simply showing up each day to get our sweat on — and that’s the most important step in starting a fitness journey. But what we do outside the gym has just as much, if not more, of an impact on our fitness gains as what we do when we’re here.

We all know nutrition plays a crucial role in our performance and recovery. But unless we have a degree or certification in nutritional studies, the concept of tracking our meals and understanding what we’re putting into our bodies can be incredibly overwhelming. For some of us, it may even be unhealthy.

It’s important to recognize where we’re at in our fitness journeys — and if we are curious about how nutrition can enhance our training and results, and if we’re ready for the next step, our upcoming Macros Workshop on Sunday, May 18 is a great place to start.

One of the most effective ways to optimize your diet is by understanding and tracking macronutrients, commonly referred to as "macros." Finding the right balance of macros, based on your goals, is key to success in maximizing your athletic performance and changing body composition.

Our Macros Workshop is designed to be an advanced level nutritional course for athletes who are looking to take their nutrition to the next level.

Participants will leave with:

  • A personalized macro calculation based on height, weight, activity level, age, personal goals, and more.
  • A baseline bodyfat test.
  • Knowledge in prepping, weighing, and tracking food with accuracy and consistency.
  • Pro tips on how to build long-term success.

To participate, you should:

  • Have a foundational level of nutritional knowledge and/or have completed one of our Nutrition Challenges.
  • Be willing to prepare your own food (meal prep).
  • Be able to weigh and measure your food (we’ll show you how).
  • Be ready for long-term commitment to nutrition, movement, and mindset to reach your goals over 3-6 months of consistent practice.

This is not right for you if:

  • You’re still building consistency in your nutritional habits.
  • Tracking food leads to an unhealthy mindset.
  • You can’t or won’t prepare and plan a majority of your meals.
  • You want immediate results or are unwilling to commit to 3-6 months at this time.

Are you ready to commit? Register here by Sunday, May 18

What Are Macros?

Understanding Macronutrients

Macros, short for macronutrients, are the nutrients that provide the energy necessary for our bodies to function. They are divided into three main categories: carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.

Each macronutrient has a specific role in supporting your overall performance and health.

  1. Carbohydrates: These are the primary source of fuel for high-intensity exercise. Carbs provide the energy needed to power through intense CrossFit training sessions and support optimal performance.
  2. Proteins: Essential for muscle growth and repair, proteins help in building and maintaining lean muscle mass, which is crucial for strength and endurance.
  3. Fats: Fats play a vital role in providing sustained energy during workouts and support hormone function, which is essential for overall health and performance.

Why Counting Macros Is Important

Counting macros allows you to tailor your diet to meet your specific needs and goals. By determining the ideal macro breakdown of proteins, carbs, and fats, you can fuel your performance, support recovery, and achieve your fitness objectives

Proper macro management can help you lose fat, gain muscle, and maintain energy levels during your workouts.

3 Easy Ways to Get Started with Macros

1. Calculate Your Custom Macro Breakdown

The first step in getting started with macros is to calculate your custom macro breakdown. This involves determining the right proportion of carbs, proteins, and fats based on your body composition, activity level, and fitness goals. Our Macros Workshop will help you calculate this!

2. Track Your Macros Using Apps

Once you have your macro breakdown, the next step is to track your daily intake. There are numerous apps available that make tracking macros easy and convenient. Apps like MyFitnessPal, Cronometer, and MacroFactor allow you to log your food intake, monitor your macro consumption, and adjust your diet accordingly. Our Macros Workshop will show you how!

These tools can help you stay on track and ensure you're meeting your nutritional goals.

3. Plan and Prepare Your Meals

Meal planning and preparation are essential for successfully managing your macros. Start by creating a weekly meal plan that includes foods rich in the macronutrients you need. Focus on whole foods like lean meats, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and grains. Our Macros Workshop will provide pro tips on how to properly plan and prep meals.

Preparing your meals in advance can save time and help you avoid the temptation of unhealthy options. Websites like BarBend offer comprehensive guides on how to eat for CrossFit, including meal planning tips and recipes.

Taking Your Training to the Next Level

Understanding and tracking macros can significantly enhance your performance and recovery as a CrossFit athlete or strength and conditioning enthusiast. By calculating your custom macro breakdown, using apps to track your intake, and planning your meals, you can optimize your diet to meet your specific needs and goals.
