If you’re new to Defined — or CrossFit in general — you’ve probably noticed that we speak a language of our own. From WODs to AMRAPs, the acronyms and shorthand can feel like a secret code. But don’t worry, we’ve all been there. At Defined, we’re all about building confidence through movement, and that includes helping you feel confident in the language of the gym.
Here’s a breakdown of some of the most common CrossFit terms you’ll hear around the gym, so you can walk in ready to crush your next workout.
This is the heart of every CrossFit class. It’s the programmed workout we all tackle together, scaled to meet you where you’re at. Every WOD is different, keeping things fresh and challenging.
You’ll be given a set amount of work to complete as quickly as possible within a set time cap.
Example: Murph – 1-Mile Run, then 20 Rounds of Cindy, then 1-Mile Run, all For Time.
You’ll be given a set amount of time to complete as many rounds or reps of a workout as you can. It’s a great way to push your pace and test your endurance.
Example: Cindy – 5 Pull-Ups, 10 Push-Ups, 15 Air Squats, as many times as possible in 10, 15, or 20 minutes.
You’ll perform a specific movement or set of reps at the start of every minute. The faster you finish, the more rest you get before the next minute begins. It’s a rhythm-based format that builds consistency and stamina.
Example: 50 Double Unders, Every Minute on the Minute for 10 Minutes (500 DUs total, if you stick with it!)
This means completing the workout exactly as written—no scaling. It’s a benchmark, not a requirement. At Defined, we celebrate effort and progress, whether you’re RX’ing or modifying.
Scaling is adjusting the workout to meet your current fitness level. That might mean lighter weights, fewer reps, or modified movements. It’s not a step down — it’s smart training.
Your best lift, fastest time, or highest score. We love celebrating PRs at Defined because they’re proof of your hard work and growth.
These workouts are designed to improve your cardiovascular capacity and metabolic efficiency. They’re usually fast-paced and combine strength and cardio elements. These are typically the last part of our workout and act as a “finisher.”
That’s what CrossFitters call the gym. Defined isn’t just a gym — it’s your box, your community, your training ground.
These are benchmark WODs named after women or fallen service members. They’re designed to test your fitness and mental grit. You’ll see names like Fran, Murph, and Cindy pop up from time to time.
